"Gather all the Hours" by Ian Creasey — story background

Can you spare an hour?

I know you're a busy man, but it won't take a minute.  Let me show you.

This is Garrett.  He's eleven years old.

You're right — he doesn't look it.  He didn't eat much when he was younger.  And lots of other things happened to him, too.  They're all in this silver bottle.

This story was inspired by a song of the same title on Heidi Berry's album Below The Waves.  The story isn't based on the song lyrics; I simply found the title evocative, and wrote a short piece derived from it.

Nowadays we are accustomed to the idea of donating organs such as kidneys or bone marrow.  But what if we could donate elements of our minds — what if we could donate happy memories to children desperately in need of a better past than they in fact lived?  Of course, you'd no longer retain those donated memories, any more than you can donate a kidney and still keep it.

How much would you be prepared to give?
